Try to space these squares apart and never place two right above or next to each other, in rows as well as between rows.

If you like a full overview of the blanket as I’ve made it, check out the colour placement image below.

The discoverer - a Mrs Maria Smith (sometimes referred to as Mary Smith but see note below) - found that the apple was versatile for cooking and eating, and was involved in spreading its popularity.

In an inspired piece of marketing she called the new apple Granny Smith.

Like all the best old varieties it has a bizarre history, being discovered in Austrialia in the 1860s as a seedling growing in the remains of a rubbish tip.

The true parentage is still unknown but is possibly French Crab.

These squares look a bit more ‘soft’, and are really quite beautiful! The blanket contains 135 squares if you join the motifs in 15 rows of 9.

I’ve placed a few colour combinations which are in my blanket, but do not follow my colour sequence below here: Round 1 Take your first colour and ch5, join with ss in 5th ch from hook, ch3 (counts as first dc here and throughout pattern), 2dc in circle (first granny cluster made), ch3, *3dc in circle, ch3; repeat from * another 2 times, join with ss in first dc. Round 2 Join your next colour with a ss in a corner ch-sp, (ch3, 2dc, ch3, 3dc) in same corner ch-sp, ch1, *3dc in next corner ch-sp, ch3, 3dc in same corner ch-sp, ch1; repeat from * another 2 times, join with ss in first dc. Round 3 Join your next colour with a ss in a corner ch-sp, (ch3, 2dc, ch3, 3dc) in same corner ch-sp, ch1, *3dc in next ch-sp, ch1, (3dc, ch3, 3dc) in corner ch-sp, ch1, 3dc in next ch-sp, ch1; repeat from * another 2 times, join with ss in first dc. Round 4 Join your next colour with a ss in a corner ch-sp, (ch3, 2dc, ch3, 3dc) in same corner ch-sp, ch1, *3dc in next ch-sp, ch1, 3dc in next ch-sp, ch1, (3dc, ch3, 3dc) in corner ch-sp, ch1, 3dc in next ch-sp, ch1; repeat from * another 2 times, join with ss in first dc. While you can make them all in advance and lay them down to determine your final arrangement, I made this blanket on-the-go.

Meaning I crocheted 15-20 squares, chose the arrangement for 1 row and joined those. This way, you won’t have to think about the whole blanket in advance.

If you follow this method, keep an eye on ‘dark’ and ‘light’ squares.

In that climate, Granny Smiths go from being green to turning completely yellow and looking almost like Golden Delicious. The acidity definitely mellows significantly, and it then takes on an amazing balanced flavor.
