After retiring Kenny enjoyed being an active volunteer at many organizations for a number of years, including the Dubuque Museum of Art, Resurrection School Library, and Serra Club. He married Dorothy O'Leary Lochner, the love of his life, August 15, 1944 in Waycross, Georgia and they enjoyed 62 1/2 years together before Dorothy's passing in January 2007. His wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren came first in his heart and he loved spending time with them and traveling with them. There will not be a visitation, but friends may greet the family following the service at the church. Mary's School and Columbia Academy and served in World War II, first with the Army's 94th division and later with the 9th United States Army Air Force Band in Paris, France. Though he was sometimes lost after losing Dorothy, he lived alone and managed all aspects of daily living on his own including driving until April this year. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Palmer of Dubuque; a son, Andy (Kayla) Palmer of Dubuque; and two grandchildren, Brayden and Hadley Palmer.

Gilman was an excellent cook and won the Hawai'i State Chili Championship Cookoff. Gilman served his country in the US Army National Guard for 6 years and served 6 months active duty.

He was active in fundraising for organizations such as ‘Ahahui Koa Anuenue (Hawaii Athletics) and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.

She and Emmett founded the New Melleray Athletic Association providing baseball and softball team activities for the kids and people of the Holy Family Parish.

Dorothy enjoyed quilting, embroidering and praying. She especially loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Prior to a lifelong career devoted to raising her family, she attended the University of Dubuque and was a teacher in the rural country schools in Dubuque County.

She was a member of Holy Family Parish in rural Peosta, and a member of its Rosary Society.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mark Palmer Memorial Fund. Inurnment will be in Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery in Oceanside, California. He married the love of his life, Julia "Judy" Connell, on Sept.
